COMPLEXITY AND AESTHETICS
Elements for a Critical State of the Art
Aesthetics is a domain usually neglected, in the human sciences, the natural sciences, and even in the arts. It is impossible to do good science, good philosophy, or good art without an explicit knowledge and development of what aesthetics is. Rather than a range of history of aesthetics, it is a question of creating a group of production, of theoretical creation centered on the relations between aesthetics and complexity. To be precise: not aesthetics and systemic approaches or systems science (systemic approach and complexity are perfectly different things). The proposal is to create a group or school of international stature on both subjects; in a word: science (= complexity sciences) and aesthetics.
This group was divided into two phases. In the first phase the participants explored the state of the art of the proposed topic and presented their approaches in a book. In the second phase Carlos Maldonado shared with all participants his proposal for a new aesthetics that knows life and is based on the living, an aesthetics that enables various points of union between art and science; from which participants create new texts from their creative areas.

This collective book elaborates the state of the art on a void, namely: the relations between aesthetics and complexity. Texts that can serve as a state of the question are, in the world, scarce, fragmentary or even unfortunate. This book is the result of a meeting between artists, designers, musicians, philosophers, looking for a promising topic: to understand how the sciences of complexity and aesthetics can converge. On the horizon, the theme that appears is the meeting, subsequently, between art and science.

About the relationship between art and science

"This book affirms that, contrary to classical belief, there is no such thing as the ineffable. We can and must say the world, life, nature. Certainly, it is impossible to think outside of language. But, at the same time, it is possible to transform and translate one language into another, and others. Traditionally, the arts and the sciences were separated, even opposed. This reciprocal exclusion was the fundamental error inherited from Plato and Aristotle. The book progresses through three moments: first, an encounter between science and art is possible; second, a dialogue between the two is possible; and finally, there is a union between the two. Only this union transforms them both. The field in which the encounter, the dialogue and the integration can take place is aesthetics. But then a good understanding of aesthetics is necessary. After all, to say the ineffable constitutes a magnificent metamorphosis of knowledge. What art and science are about is not simply types of knowledge, but forms of life. In this way, a metamorphosis of knowledge is a metamorphosis of life itself."
